RACING RULES SEMINARS


Long Beach Yacht Club will be holding workshops reviewing The Racing Rules of Sailing for beginning to advanced sailors, judges and potential judges.  The workshops will be held at LBYC every other Tuesday night at 7pm, starting TONIGHT!  The costs is free and you need not be a member to attend.

SCHEDULE


  • March 6 - The Basic Principles, Part 1, Rules 1-5. Primarily safety issues and fair sailing.
  • March 20 - Part 2, Section A Right of Way;  Rules 10-13.  How does a boat acquire right of way, what are limits and what can you do?  Also included   Rules 21-23, when right of way rules are not in effect.
  • April 3 - Part 2, Section B, General Limitations; Rules 14-17.  This continues right of way discussions on changing course, proper course, and definition of the word “Damage”.
  • April 17 -  Part 2 Section C, At Marks and Obstructions; Rules 18-20. Sailors, especially navigators, will review situations to clarify these rules and terms including zone, mark room, inside or outside.
  • May 8 - Part 3, Conduct of a Race, Rules 25-36.  Many items aside from starting the race including discussions of  I flag and  Black  flag, changing the race course, when can you abandon or postpone the race, how to finish when the mark is missing, and on which side must you leave the mark when rounding or finishing.
  • May 22 - Part 4, Other Requirements When Racing; Rules 40-55.  Discussion of Rule 42 sculling, ooching, rocking and pumping, outside help, use of propulsion before and during a race, penalties and flags.
  • June 5 - Part 5, Protests, Redress, Hearings, Misconduct and Appeals; Rules 60-71 and Appendix F.  Protests can have more favorable outcomes with complete procedure knowledge, how to present and how to appeal or how the protest should be run. Can you protest the Race Committee?
  • June 19 - Part 6, Entry and Qualification, Part 7, Race organization; rules 75-91,  and  Appendix  A, Scoring  Discussion of excluding boats, changing  Racing Rules, class rules and review of two scoring systems.  A final question and answer session covering all rules and questions are invited.
